  • Ghana puts new currency note into circulation
The long wait for the new Two Ghana Cedis note is over as the Central Bank governor Friday officially commissioned the note into circulation. The new note, the Bank of Ghana says, is meant to lessen the burden on the one Ghana Cedi note which hitherto was the next lower denominator below the five Ghana cedis note. Change arising from the use of the five Ghana cedi has regularly posed challenges.

The worn-out state of the GH¢1 as the result of the pressure defeats the Bank’s Clean Note Policy, which seeks to ensure that only good quality banknotes remain in circulation.  The introduction of the new denomination will therefore expand the series of banknotes in circulation, enhance exchangeability and facilitate transactions.

Akosua Adjepong has marked a legendary 20 years of being a musician at the Accra International Conference Centre. The Akosua Adjepong I knew 20 years ago when I was 7 years was the same Akosua I saw on Saturday. Indeed a lot of things have changed in her life but not her looks. Though her age has multiplied, Akosua still has the same looks. The older she grows, the more pretty she becomes. The historic show dubbed ‘Akosua @ 20’ concert which was attended by lovers and well wishers of Akosua kicked off with performances of Wind Afrique Band, DSP Kofi Sarpong, Kofi Bentsil, King David in the first phase.

The concert’s theme ‘honouring the pacesetters, living the highlife and spreading the gospel’ best fit Akosua’s personality. Her first performance on the night was met with thunderous jeers and applause from the audience. She sang some of her gospel songs and other gospel songs, Asabea Cropper, the queen of highlife music and her brother the Kente man, AB Crenstil and Gyadu Blay Ambolley thrilled the audience.

Akosua’s sixth album “This is my time” was released after a prayer from her husband Rev. Prophet Daniel Asamoah-Larbi of House of God Intentional Prayer Ministries on the night and copies were sold to the audience. The first copy sold at 2,000 Ghana Cedis.

• Matador Escapes Death By Skin Of His Teeth

A matador cheated death by millimetres when the beast he was tormenting rammed its horn straight through his chin and out through his mouth. It only took a split second for Julio Aparicio to became the bull's bloody victim at a Madrid bullring. The animal had already been pierced with several banderillas and was close to being killed when he seized his chance of revenge. Aparicio stumbled and the angry beast charged at him, prompting the crowd at the Las Ventas bullring to gasp in horror - expecting the bull to rip off the fighter's jaw or even his head.

Ringside medics rushed him to hospital where leading surgeon Dr Maximo Garcia Pedros performed two operations which saved his life.
And, in despite the moment of madness they had witnessed, the stunned crowd settled down to watch two more bullfights as part of the city's San Isidro festival.

A 10-year-old German boy allegedly stole £15,000 from his parents to pay school bullies who threatened to attack him.The boy handed over €17,000 (£14,700) after a 12-year-old said his older brother would physically assault him if he failed to deliver the cash, according to The Daily Telegraph. The blackmail apparently began in March in Aalen, a town in the southern German state of Baden-Württemberg, where the boy lives. "Because the older brother is known not to be a softie, the boy was really frightened and always delivered the money," said a police spokesman.

According to German police the bullies acted individually asking for "protection money" or threatening violence if the boy would not pay. The victim's parents used to keep large amounts of cash around the house and did not notice the money being taken, German authorities have claimed.Police said that only a small amount of the money had been recovered. Most of the cash was reportedly spent on clothes and computer games. The bullies, who are all aged 11 or 12, cannot be prosecuted because they are too young.

Mrs Augustina Akumanyi, Deputy Chairman of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has expressed worry over the issue of fewer women participation in elections to occupy public offices. She said various women organisations had been trying to encourage Ghanaian women to go into politics, yet there seemed to be little or no progress. Mrs Akumanyi was speaking at a stakeholders' workshop on electoral conflicts at Akwatia. She said with the upcoming district level elections, there was the need to educate participants to encourage women to contest. Mrs Akumanyi noted that within a couple of months, the term of the current district assemblies and unit committees would come to an end.

Speaking on the topic; "Women Representative in Active Politics in Ghana," the Eastern Regional Director of the NCCE, Mr Eric Bortey, said women were noted to move nations, but unfortunately, whether intentionally or otherwise, their contributions were seen as supportive or peripheral. He traced the role of women in politics from pre-independence days to the present and said two main strategies had been suggested to make gender balance in public life a reality. These was a comprehensive training package that would involve officials to manage and work with women in economic and social institutional frameworks, and improvement in media and civil rights activities that built the image of women.

• ID Cards To Roll Out Next Month - NIA

• Fewer Women Participation In Elections Worrisome
The National Identification Authority (NIA) will, from next month, commence the production of national identification cards following the installation of an uninterrupted power supply (UPS) unit. The installation is expected to avert a possible legal suit against the government of Ghana by Safran Morpho, formerly SAGEM, the Internet solution providers of the NIA. According to the terms of the contract between Safran Morpho and the NIA, the project was to have been completed in two years. The Executive Secretary of the NIA, Dr William Ahadzie, told journalists in Accra yesterday that the installation of the UPS marked the completion of about 80 per cent of the NIA’s contract agreement with Safran Morpho.

He explained that the contract with the solution providers included site inspection activities, the training of people to operate the Data Card MX 6000, which is the card production system, and an operational acceptance test to establish the working order and production demands of the equipment. Most of the mobile work station equipment for registering applicants have been conveyed to the region and kept in a secure place, while the identification and training of registration officials is ongoing. The NIA has also held meetings with regional and district officials in the Brong Ahafo Region as part of the preparatory actions, while an office of the authority is to be opened soon to help in the co-ordination of efforts during the mass registration exercise.

Provisional results of the 2010 Population and Housing Census will be released in January 2011, the National Census Secretariat has indicated. The results will spell out the current national population, as well as indicate the respective populations of all the regions and districts of the country. However, the generation of analytical tables giving detail statistics of demographic data, such as the educational background and economic status of the population, will be released in January 2012. The Government Statistician, Dr Grace Bediako, said now was a critical time for publicity and education on the census and, therefore, called on religious bodies, traditional rulers and the media to get actively involved in the exercise.

The Deputy Government Statistician, Dr Philomena Nyarko, said preparations for the census were on course and expressed gratitude to Mr Akologu and members of the NCPEC for the interest they had shown in the operations of the secretariat.
Dr Bediako particularly asked for police protection for census officials in conflict areas and during enumeration on Census Night.
